History

As the Northern Territory Football Association began, a few blokes decided that the P.I.N.T (Pos-Tel Institute of the Northern Territory) Club could enter a team in the new football competition. The instigators of this decision were Jeff Watkins, Marty Barlow, Iain Frazier, Paul Abbott, Ted Cocker and Bob White. From there on the PINT Football Club has never looked back. The aforementioned people formed a committee, got the club off the ground and up and running in the NTFA. The inaugural coach of PINT was Didge McDonald, and he led the team to a Grand Final.

PINT FC is based at the Marrara Cricket Ground, formerly PINT Park, which is located adjacent to the PINT Club Darwin. The PINT Club is a fantastic home base for the football club.
PINT play in green jumpers with gold vertical stripes, over the years different styles of jumpers have been adopted such as green jumpers with a white and gold V and white and green with a gold sash.

It is reported that PINT was known as the PINT Panthers between 1982 and 1997; however, some say that only the media dubbed the PINT Football Club ‘the Panthers’. Nonetheless since 1997, PINT has been known as the Greenants. PINT is often referred to as ‘Pints’ or ‘PINTS’ however PINT is the correct name.

PINT won its first Senior/A Grade premiership in 1986-87 under coach Dennis LewFatt and were able to make it back-to-back the following season. During the 18-year NTFA competition the club was able to win three Seniors/A Grade premierships and two Reserves/B Grade premierships.  The NTFA competition became Top End Australian Football Association (TEAFA) in 2000/01.  During the 10 years of the TEAFA competition the Greenants were always competitive but took until the last two years to win a premiership (2008/09), in the last season of the competition (2009/10) the Senior team completed an undefeated premiership.

2010 saw the merging of the two football leagues in Darwin with the TEAFA clubs being absorbed into the revamped 3 division NTFL competition with PINT entering teams in Division 1 & 2.  The Division 2 team made the grand final in the first year and the Division 1 team grand finals in 2014/15 and 2015/16.  At last, 10 years after the clubs last premiership the club won its first NTFL premiership under coach Matthew Gill in 2019/20.

After playing for the club for 31years club legend Paul "Spud" Allen ran out in his 400th game for the club in 2014.  An incredible achievement of durability and commitment.  Spud and wife Cathy are still are heavily involved in the club, and we would not be where we are today without them.

Season 2015/16 saw a major advancement of the football club with the introduction of a Division 1 women’s team.   The Queenants, as they have become known, played finals in their inaugural year which was a fantastic achievement given that it was the first time many of them had played Aussie Rules.

In season 2016/17 PINT entered its first side into a Premier NT competition when the Queenants become a founding team in the inaugural season of NTFL Women’s Premier League. The Queenants have been a magnificent addition to the football club both on and off the field.

The club became an Auskick centre in 2016 and it has grown to became one of the best in the Territory with up to 100 young footballers participating.  The starting of the Auskick has led to our first under 10 team participating in the NTFL season 2019/20.

Season 2020/21 was a remarkable won for the club with all four teams Men’s Division 1 & 2 and Women’s Premier League and Division 2 winning premierships.  This is a very rare occurrence anywhere in the country that every team that a club has wins a premiership.  Matthew Gill guided the Division 1 team to back-to-back premierships; former dual PINT premiership player and multiple Premier League premiership coach Ricky Nolan led the Women’s premier league team to their first premiership.  John Kensey coached the Division 2 to their first premiership in over 25 years.  The women’s Division 2 team were premiers under coach Storm Young in just the second of year the Division 2 competition.

The 2021-22 season was another very successful season for the club with all senior teams making the finals.  Women’s Reserves and Division 2 made it back-to-back premierships and unfortunately Division 1 fell at the final hurdle on their quest for three in a row.  Our junior program had a massive expansion moving from one Under 10 team to 3 Under 10 teams, Under 12 Girls, Under 12 Boys (Premiers) and combined Under 14 Boys and Girls teams with St Marys.

The spread of ages through the club provides an open and welcoming atmosphere for not only the players but their families as well. Uniquely over the years PINT have had fathers and sons play in the same team. Having started out as a social club team formed on the back of a couple of cold beers the membership has diversified greatly over the years, today we boast citizens from all walks of life such as defence force personnel, engineers, students, public servants, Police Fire and Emergency Services, small business operators, teachers, tradies, and those currently between jobs among others.

The club culture continues to be inclusive with anybody welcome to join and the club continues to treat its people as its number one priority. PINT Football club is delighted to be able to offer the same opportunities to both men and boys, women and girls and we welcome one and all to come and join us.

2024-25 marks the 43rd  year for the football club and from those humble beginnings it has grown into the biggest senior football club in the Territory with 7 Senior teams and a fast growing junior program that spans 10 teams.
